Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson June 1, 1926 – August 4, 1962, was an American actress, model, and singer. She was a top-billed actress for only a decade, but her films grossed $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion dollars nowadays)
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monroe spent most of her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage and married at age 16. She was working in a factory during World War II when she met a photographer from the First Motion Picture Unit and began a successful pin-up modelling career. In 1946, Monroe had a successful career as a model. That year, she signed her first movie contract. With the contract came a new name and image; she began calling herself “Marilyn Monroe” and dyed her hair blonde.
Throughout her career, Monroe was signed and released from several contracts with film studios. In the mid-1950s Monroe grew tired of bubbly, dumb blonde roles and moved to New York City to study acting with Lee Strasberg at the Actors’ Studio.
During her career, Monroe’s films grossed more than $200 million. Monroe’s most notable films include:
- The Asphalt Jungle (1950)
- All About Eve (1950)
- Niagara (1953)
- Gentleman Prefer Blondes (1953)
- How to Marry a Millionaire (1954)
- There’s No Business, Like Show Business (1954)
- The Seven Year Itch (1955)
- Bus Stop (1956)
- The Prince and the Showgirl (1957) 13, 2019
- Some Like It Hot (1959)
- The Misfits (1961)
- Something’s Got to Give (1962)
Marilyn Monroe died of a barbiturate overdose late in the evening of Saturday, August 4, 1962, at her 12305 Fifth Helena Drive home in Los Angeles, California. Her body was discovered before dawn on Sunday, August 5th.
I absolutely love Marilyn Monroe, she is a strong woman who never stopped pursuing her dreams.
Marilyn was used and treated with disrespect. She was a beautiful woman who starred in many films, she had dreamt of being an actress since she was seven years old! Marilyn Monroe has inspired me and so many other girls to follow their dreams no matter how hard! Marilyn had a tough childhood she was abused and put into several foster homes growing up. She was later caught up in a modelling agency which then led her on to becoming one of Hollywood’s leading female actresses!
However, in 1962 the fatal news of her death spread around the world and many fans paid respect to the wonderful actress. Monroe’s death was believed to of been suicide because of her mental health issues and stress.
Marilyn has inspired me to become a child actress and model, an Oscar does sound nice!
Marilyn was taken for granted and I think that she needs to be remembered more and as a symbol for what young girls are still going through today.
